- Identify ethical dilemmas encountered in professional nursing practice:Among the many ethical dilemmas that professional nurses will encounter , protecting patient privacy and confidentiality is essential . As future nurses, there will be different patients with diverse cultures, diagnoses that can become an ethical dilemma. In Module 1 we see the example, where an ethical dilemma may start seeing other staff member discuss patient health information out in public with the notion that nobody was around. It is in the ethical principle to keep such information confidential even if it appears to be a harmless information. This is a violation of HIPAA. The course has aptly shown ways to identifying ethical dilemmas and methods to handle them and ultimately avoiding any legal issues. These type of ethical dilemmas can adversely affect patient care and damage the trust the healthcare team have created with the patient and their family.
Describe the ethical theories and principles influencing healthcare decisions. One of the important theory that made most sense to me is autonomy and we saw this from several modules within the course. This particular principle emphasizes that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own lives without interference from others. This theory can allow the patient to determine the best path to take for their own benefit and content. For example, an ethical dilemma may arise where the client wants one thing and the family members want another regarding the treatment plan. And so even if you as the nurse, do not agree with the patient’s decision, it is still important to support his/her health decisions.
Explain the inter – dependency of genetics, genomics, and ethics on nursing care.Describe the principles of genetics and genomics. The interdependence of genetic, genomics, and ethics is important for a nursing career. Gaining knowledge on how different conditions can affect the genetics and genomics of different patients is vital and can help explain the information to the patients and their family. Moreover, being aware of one’s genetic history is highly w.ginahelp.org/GINAhelp.pdf - Response 2
- The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act was inacted to eliminate genetic discrimination. GINA was designed to prevent genetic discrimination from happening. It helped individuals feel more comfortable learning about their health and “You may choose to use genetic testing and other services to learn about health risks without fear of genetic discrimination” (GINAhelp, 2010). By understanding GINA I can give the clients knowledge about the rights they have. So, if they were ever in a position where they were experiencing genetic discrimination they would know that people cannot deny them certain rights because of that reason. Design nursing care strategies which incorporate genetic and genomic risk factors: This includes things like educating clients on important information, services, and providing proper referrals and resources to the patient and family. This could include resources they can use immediately or resources that would be beneficial for them to have and understand for their future. Critical thinking: I believe that one’s ability to critically think never stops growing. The more education one continues to obtain the more critical thinking they can achieve. For me personally throughout this course my ability to critically think has improved greatly. Critical thinking can greatly affect one’s care given. By critically thinking nurses’ jobs will be more effective because of their ability to evaluate the information given to them. This knowledge will allow me to give the best possible care to my patients because I can critically think and evaluate their health information and assess their future risk factors.
