- The purpose of this discussion board is to explain the differences between confidentiality, and provide answers to the case making the Best Choice.Confidentiality and privacy are similar, however have some differences. Privacy is the right of that patients have in regards to having their information shared with anyone. Confidentiality is the responsibility of the nurse to maintain privacy of another. (Burkhardt,2014). The key work there was maintain, to keep the privacy. ( At work I deal with this almost everyday. People regualry call the emergency room to get updates on there family member, however how am I to know who they are over the phone. So I simply tell them that I can’t give information over the phone, or even if that patient is currently in the Emergency Room. I usually tell them that if they are concerned to call the patient or come to the emergency room. In regards to Loras, case which has more principals involved including, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and confidentiality. The nurse has an obligation to report to child and family services. According to the states of Ohio the nurse has a duty to report sexual, and physical assault for anyone that is a minor or under 18 years of age. Lora is 17 years old and is considered a minor in the states of Ohio the same rules apply if the patient is seventeen, fourteen or four years of age. ( “Lawriter- ORC- 2151.421 Reporting child abuse or neglect.”,2019) The fact that Lora asked to keep this information quiet does not matter, however I would explain the circumstance to her, and that I had a duty to report. The nurse has two options, to maintain confidentiality or to report the abuse. If the nurse were to keep the confidentiality then the nurse could face repercussions by the state board of nursing, and be prosecuted. The nurse can also report the abuse, and attempt to help Lora. These situations happen way more then they need to. Fortunatley I do not work with children, but do work with adults that are abused. The only difference in caring for these cases is simply asking the individual if they want help to get away from there situation or not. In the child’s case she does not have the autonomy. So in Lora’s situation we have to notify the appropriate athorites, so her autonomy does not outweigh the responsibility to report the abuse.Burkhardt, M.a (2014).
