Each state has developed early learning guidelines or standards to help guide what children should be learning at different ages. One of these guidelines is how children learn and experience the world around them – or approaches to learning. Just like educators know children all learn at their own pace, educators also know children experience the world around them differently. These approaches to learning are integrated differently into the various state early learning guidelines and standards.

Directions
Part A:

In the first part of this assignment you will research state early learning guidelines and standards regarding approaches to play and learning. Then, you will compare state standards and write an analysis.

Step 1: Research

Using your state’s Early Learning Guidelines/Standards, find the section devoted to Approaches to Play and Learning. Use this link to find your State’s Early Learning Standards

  • Review where your state learning standards discuss approaches to play and learning.
  • If you cannot find a domain for Approaches to Play and Learning in your state standards, look for something close to it with wordage like those found in the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards.
  • Here are some keywords to look for in your States Early Learning standard. The following sub-domains are from Wisconsin Early Learning Standards for Approaches to Learning:
  • Curiosity, Engagement, and Persistence
  • Creativity and Imagination
  • Diversity in Learning
  • Some phrases or ideas may be woven throughout your state’s standards. If you cannot find anything that resembles Approaches to Play and Learning, select something you can use from your state’s standards that would be similar to Wisconsin’s for the next step.
 
Part B

In the second part of this assignment you will watch videos of children in play. After viewing the videos, you will analyze and write about the approaches to play and learning demonstrated in the videos to apply your learning from Part A.

Step 3: Application & Analysis

Watch the following three videos for this assignment.

Video #1: Infants: Clay Slip [2 Minutes, 45 Seconds]

Video #2: Toddlers: An Invented Game [1 Minute, 33 Seconds]

Video #3: Preschoolers: Cheers for Chaislyn! [2 Minutes, 15 Seconds]

After watching the videos, analyze two videos in a two-page reflection. Keep your state’s Early Learning Guidelines/Standards (from Part A) in mind for this section.

  1. Write a brief but detailed observation of what you witness in the video.
  2. Identify the approach to play and learning that the child(ren) exhibited. If there is more than one, please include all you witness. Use descriptive evidence from the video to support each approach.
  3. Based on what you saw in the video, select one goal from your state’s learning standards/guidelines and write one learning objective that would match what you saw in the video to facilitate reaching the chosen goal.
