Week 7 Discussion: Ethical Considerations

One of your articles this week was published in 1989 (The Ethical Reasoning Process in Organizational Consulting). For this week’s discussion you are asked to analyze the article by Tannenbaum et al. (1989) and discuss its relevance today based upon the additional readings and resources provided this week. Make an argument for what appear to be the greatest ethical considerations for coaches or managers as coaches within today’s complex organizational settings.

There are two discussions which you need to reply;

Discussion 1

I think most professionals can understand the importance of ethics, and although it has been a topic for decades, it certainly has faced new challenges as time has passed. Although Tannenbaum et al.’s (1989) article is over 30 years old, it still has relevance today. They state that “we cannot teach people how to deal with each and every dilemma” (Tannenbaum et al., 1989) which still holds true as it is nearly impossible to do so. The article goes on to discuss that ethics education is a main way to instill ethics concepts and reasoning into professionals. This “solution” is still used today as business schools require an ethics course and many companies include some form of ethics training for their employees.

Crosbie (2008) provides five tips to incorporate ethics, with three of the five related to education and training.Tannenbaum et al.’s (1989) article also states that their research showed that when standards did not exist, agreement amongst participants on an issue was low as they relied on different reasons to rationalize their decisions. Today, many professions and organizations have a code of ethics which communicates their standards to all their members or employees. And in emerging professions, such as executive coaching, efforts are being made to create a professional code of ethics as the value for standards is being realized (Hannafey et al., 2013).

In today’s ever-changing and complex economy, organizations (and the people who work for them) are trying to be the best at [fill in the blank]. To achieve the desired outcome, people may bend ethics to make it happen. Even with ethics education, training and codes of ethics, people who consider themselves ethical also admit to lying, cheating, and stealing (Crosbie, 2008). People will rationalize their bad behavior to convince themselves that the behavior is (and therefore they are) ethical. This is a challenge for organizations and the coaches working in them.For executive coaches and coaches as managers, ethical issues can certainly arise, such as: “confidentiality questions, potential and actual conflicts of interest, questions about professional standards, success measurement issues, and financial matters” (Hannafey et al., 2013).

Since coaching is about relationships, this involves trust. But when the coaching relationship is with more than just one party (for example, an executive and the organization), the coach has an obligation to both parties and information shared with coach could cause an ethical dilemma. As an example (and admittedly not a good one), if an environmental company hires the coach for an employed executive and that executive shares with the coach that they do not believe in recycling and never do it, the coach may feel that this goes against the company’s ethics. It is not illegal to not recycle, and if the coaching were part of a different company, it would not be an issue, but due to the nature of the company and their ethical standards, this poses a quandary for the coach.

• Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. • Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

• APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

• Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
