As a nurse engaged in evidence-based practice, it is important to recognize how statistics and other data analysis tools are used to generate and assess evidence. Most nurses need only a foundational understanding of statistical tools and terminology to understand the majority of research studies. As a nurse, you should be able to recognize the most commonly used statistical tests, how and when they are used, and how significance is determined.NURS 6052 Week 9 Essay Discussion

In this Discussion, you examine different types of statistics and statistical tests, when and why these particular tests would be selected for use, and, most importantly, what the results indicate. To this end, you will be assigned to a group by Day 1 of this week. Each group will be assigned one of the five chapters listed in this week’s Learning Resources and will develop a study sheet on their chapter that will be shared with the other groups.

To prepare:

Review the information in your assigned chapter.

As a group, develop a 1-page study sheet that includes the following:

The key concepts of the chapter: Focus on the basic concepts that are important for nurses to understand as they review research studies.

A description of the statistical methods covered in the chapter, what they measure, and under what circumstances they are used. Identify examples of how statistical methods have been used in research studies.

An explanation of the key statistical tests and how they measure significance (if applicable).NURS 6052 Week 9 Essay Discussion

Note: This should be a collaborative effort, with each member of the group making contributions to the design and content of the study sheet. Use the Groups link on the left navigation bar to collaborate with your group. When you have developed your 1-page study sheet, select one member to post it to the Week 9 Discussion Forum so that the rest of your colleagues can access it.

By Day 5

Post your group’s study sheet. Discuss why it is important for nurses to understand the basics of these statistical methods.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

By Day 6

Respond to at least two other groups on two different days using one or more of the following approaches:

Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, and evidence.

Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.

Focus groups allow for broader and deeper insights into the brand and related topics versus very precise and structured quantitative research studies. A 2004 Iowa State University Extension article points out that focus groups and other qualitative techniques are rich in detail and often provide surprises on what people may think of a product. This is quite different from quantitative surveys or studies which limit respondents to single-word or short phrase multiple choice responses. Focus groups also offer an opportunity to research small children who may not read well enough to complete surveys or questionnaires.

Interactive Feedback

Another major advantage of focus groups is they allow for interactive research with a small group as opposed to individual responses on surveys. Through this interaction, moderators get the content from responses, and they get to observe the group and pick up on emotional responses, contradictions, stress, anger, frustration, enthusiasm and other feelings that do not come through a structured questionnaire. This interactive discussion format typically draws out more useful data than a collection of individual research responses.

Low Costs

In a November 2009 article, “Business First” correspondent Emory Williamson reports that some companies have invested significantly in new technology and software to collect research data, but relatively low-cost focus groups remain one of the more productive consumer research techniques. Focus groups generally require little to no technology and are often completed in just a few hours on one day. Williamson cites Tim Hellige of the research firm, Bandy Carroll Hellige, who indicates that his company invested $90,000 in a focus group facility to offer more flexibility and lower costs to its clients.

Disadvantages

Two common disadvantages of focus groups are group think and accuracy. Moderators may tend to generalize or categorize individual feedback into group sentiment, writes Dr. David Carson, Professor of Public Administration at North Carolina State University. Additionally, those with strong influence, such as the moderator and vocal group members, can sway the conversation and make it seem one-dimensional or quash feedback from less vocal participants. Response accuracy is a concern because when participants know they are involved in research for a particular brand or company, they may feel less comfortable speaking out against that brand in front of the moderator and company on-lookers.

  • Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

  • Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

  • APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

  • Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. • LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. NURS 6052 Week 9 Discussion

  • Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

  • Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
