NURS 3100 3101 week 1 Discussion: Creating Your Personal Nursing Legacy
Main Question Post: I chose Option 1: Describe at least two current and/or future challenges in nursing and the solutions that are being proposed to meet those challenges. Explain how furthering your education will enable you to build upon your personal nursing legacy in meeting these types of challenges
As we are aware, healthcare has come upon the challenge of COVID19 pandemic. As the country shut down and the community and hospital did their best to prepare for it, the time came when the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) happened. Not only where we as nurses a little nervous about what the actual effects of the virus entailed, as front-line workers, we were out to war with limited gear. Sadly, my facility had to remove PPE carts/caddies from out of the halls due to visitors being caught hoarding and taking home masks and other PPE equipment. Shortly after, visitors where restricted from hospitals. Another measure implemented entailed providing nurses with PPE only for contact, and a mask was available only if your assignment consisted of an airborne patient. The situation progressed to the point where PPE was locked away at the CNOs office and one had to go sign it out in a log by providing justification of assignment and one mask was provided per shift. Although at times it seemed unreal, we had recached that point where our facility was doing the best they could to make the most of the little they had left before being able to have a steady supply of PPE for their personnel. As I evaluate our current situation, I think if how our dearest Florence Nightingale provided care for others in situations that probably also entailed facing certain diseases not well understood at the time, or endured hardships as she served during the time of war. Yet as Marge describes Nightingale she was “one of quiet determination, humility and political strategy to improve quality of life” (Hegge, 2011). She was humble about her accomplishments as she strived to be a great nurse leader.
A second challenge in nursing is the current nurse to patient ratio. When I entered the health care field in 2008 as a CNA, I recall nurses having assignments of five to one, now, at times my facility has ratios of seven to one nurse. There are times when I feel my license may be at risk as I’m trying to accomplish my tasks as fast as I can while at the same time keeping my patients safe. Yet, the risk of missing something is always the fear. I dislike feeling at the end of my shift I didn’t give all my patients the time and attention they deserve as I was scavenging through my shift to attend to the sickest or get caught up in procedures. In unit meetings nursing personnel have voiced our concerns and propose to have our ratios decreased. We hope administration and corporate will take our voices into consideration.
As I identify my career legacy map and further my education to obtain my master’s degree to work as a ID NP, I look forward to one day having proper medications handy to help combat COVID 19. Always keeping in mind “feeling effective, creative and balanced in a career” (Hinds, et al., 2014). The lessons for my career come with realizing we won’t always have the best situations handed to us as nurses, but I have the knowledge and trust in my own skills to make the best of the times to keep myself and patients safe.

Discussion – Week 1
For the following discussion post, I have chosen to answer Option 2: Describe a nurse colleague or current nurse leader who inspires you. Identify and describe how this person’s actions have led to positive outcomes related to patients, peers, and or supervisors. What do you see yourself doing similarly or differently.
Discussion: Creating Your Personal Nursing Legacy
Many nurses throughout history have left long and distinguished legacies of excellence in a variety of ways. What impact might you have on the patients with whom you come into contact every day?
The past and current challenges to nursing and health care have been and are being met by exemplary nurse leaders. Each has exhibited or is exhibiting enhanced focus and ideation, enriched values, purpose, and grit! The successful nurse leader must prepare to be an effective thinker, communicator, motivator, and champion of personalized health care.
Nurses have built and will continue to build upon a rich legacy of innovations and commitment to meet issues of nursing and health care. Florence Nightingale, for example, was highly educated, focused on a path of lifelong discovery, and dedicated to knowledge and science in the service of others. Her legacy made us a better society.
Your individual nursing legacy is an integral part of the legacy of nursing as a whole. Think about how you want to be remembered at the end of your nursing career. Envision what you want to leave to the profession in the areas of practice, education, and research. Make a conscious decision to plan deliberately what your legacy will be, rather than just letting it happen. Review the Learning Resources and write at least 350 words addressing one of the following Discussion topics.
In this Discussion, you have the opportunity to begin considering your own personal nursing legacy.

Discussion WEEK 1
For this discussion post I have chosen to answer option 2 and discuss a nurse leader that has inspired me. Describe a nurse colleague or current nurse leader who inspires you. Identify and describe how this person’s actions have led to positive outcomes related to patients, peers, and/or supervisors. What do you see yourself doing similarly or differently?
I have chosen to write about the DON at my current facility her name in Bobbie Jo N. As the DON of a long-term care and acute rebab facility Bobbie Jo has exemplified all the qualities of an extraordinary nurse leader in these trying times. Particularly the ability to organize her team toward a common goal and respect for others particularly those in her care (Hegge, 2011). With the introduction of new regulations and restrictions by the CDC during the current pandemic she has led her team with wisdom, courage and compassion. These are scary times and change can be a difficult thing for a lot of people. She has set an example of excellence for every member of her staff through these trying times and made sure their fears, concerns and ideas are heard. She has also shown the upmost compassion and reverence for her patients during these unprecedented times. Regularly taking time out of her day to sit with residents and participate in activities to help stem the loneliness and isolation these new restrictions have brought. The residents and staff of the facility I work in are truly fortunate to have her as a leader during this challenging time.
I think it is important to look to those I admire to further my own nursing legacy. Using meaningful guides to and setting goals to further my profession (Hinds et al., 2015). I hope to exemplify these qualities of excellence in my own nursing career and build on the skills and example set by the exceptional nursing leaders I have been surrounded by. I can see myself taking her example in my everyday nursing practice by listening and collaborating with my team members on a regular basis. I can only hope to bring the overwhelming amount of compassion and reverence for those in my care she has shown, and I try to keep these ideals in mind during the sometimes-trying parts of my practice. These ideals and examples are important to achieve the outcome of excellent patient care I hope to bring to my own nursing legacy.
