 This exercise will assist you in thinking about the best way to search an electronic database. After reading Ch. 6 of the textbook and reviewing the library tutorials, and the Searching Databases with a PICO Question video find one research article related to a PICO/PIO question you create. The research article must be a primary* research study, published in a peer-reviewed journal, and no more than 5 years old. PICO stands for four different potential components of a health question used in Cochrane Review research:

• Patient, Population or Problem
  • What are the characteristics of the patient or population (demographics, risk factors, pre-existing conditions, etc)?
  • What is the condition or disease of interest?
• Intervention 
  • What is the intervention under consideration for this patient or population?
• Comparison
  • What is the alternative to the intervention (e.g. placebo, different drug, surgery)?
• Outcome
  • What are the included outcomes (e.g. quality of life, change in clinical status, morbidity, adverse effects, complications)?
  • These components give you the specific who, what, when, where and how, of an evidence-based health-care research question. The PICO model is widely used and taught in evidence-based health care as a strategy for defining Review criteria, formulating questions and search strategies, and for characterizing included studies or meta-analyses. There are three different sorts of PICOs within Cochrane Reviews:
    • Review PICOs – Used to decide which studies to include in a Review. You can find this documented in the Methods section of the Review
    • Comparison PICOs – One Review may have multiple comparisons, which group different parts of the Review PICO in different ways, to answer more specific questions.
    • Included Study PICOs – Each included study has its own PICO which may include additional PICO components, such as other outcomes, that the Review is not interested in.

 *Note that literature reviews, discussion papers, systematic review, meta-analyses, meta-synthesis are not primary research sources.  STEP 1: Research question: Recall your learning from Assignment 1 – Creating Clinical Questions. Create a therapy/treatment/intervention type PICO/PIO question related to a nursing care practice change issue of your choice aimed at improving nursing care. • APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

• Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class.
