Per the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) website, Texas law says anyone who thinks a child, or person 65 years or older, or an adult with disabilities is being abused, neglected, or exploited must report it to DFPS. This applies to all individuals and it not limited to health care workers.
According to the DFPS here are some examples of things that must be reported”
- Child abuse and neglect.
- Abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and exploitation of the elderly or adults with disabilities living at home.
- Abuse of children in child-care facilities or treatment centers.
- Abuse of adults and children who live in state facilities or are being helped by programs for people with mental illness or intellectual disabilities. These are run by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) or Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS).

I have seen cases where an elderly person is being cared for at home by family and are brought it dirty, unkempt with multiple wounds. Elder care of a bed bound patient is difficult and many times families do not have the resources. I have seen cases where the family seemed to really be trying and cases where it seemed the families where in it for financial reasons, but that was not for me to decide. The next step is to contact case management who will then file a formal complaint on the behalf of our facility.
