Schizophrenia is a serious and complex mental disorder, which requires medication a, but multiple interventions may be more effective including psychological intervention, medication and family intervention. In patients with schizophrenia there are many who still show serious sigs of cognitive deficits even after pharmacological treatment. Thus, psychosocial therapies can be an effective treatment option for patients with schizophrenia who cannot or do not want to take antipsychotic medications. There has been increased focus on psychological therapies for schizophrenia as one of the strategies to enhance rehabilitation and reintegration in the society when combined with other options such as family intervention. As such, nurses retrained on integrating multiple interventions to improve functioning for the patients with schizophrenia.

Cognitive deficits are associated with perceptual distortions, acute disorganization, attention problems, differential reasoning, memory loss and social judgment since patients struggle with cognitive impairments effective intervention will result in reducing the severity of symptoms improving functioning as well as treatment adherence, which are all linked to improved quality of life.
